Environmental Microbiology / Biodegradation

  • EPA Microbiology home page
Provides access to microbiology-related information, developed or managed by the EPA.
  • The University of Minnesota Biocatalysis/Biodegradation Database
Microbial biocatalytic reactions and biodegradation pathways primarily for xenobiotic chemical compounds. From the main path, individual pathways can be accessed. The degradation pathway maps include organisms which can initiate the pathway. In every case, each pathway map provides detailed information on each hyperlinked step, including graphics, product/substrate reactions, and external links to further information.

Environmental Pollution

  • Atmosphere, Climate & Environment Information Programme
A UK site adopting a holistic approach, this Programme focuses on the full life cycle of atmospheric pollution (in the context of sustainability), looking at causes and impacts of atmospheric pollution, and ways it can be managed. This will include the topics on air quality, acid rain, global climate change and ozone depletion, energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable transport and waste management.
  • Atmospheric Physics / Meteorology
  • Global Change Master Directory (GCMD)
This is a comprehensive directory of descriptions of data sets of relevance to global change research. The GCMD database includes descriptions of data sets (DIFs) covering climate change, the biosphere, hydrosphere & oceans, geology, geography, and human dimensions of global change. Included at this site is a listing of WWW Servers with Atmosphere, and Climate Data & Information.
  • Governmental Sites--Funding Opportunities
  • Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
Established by WMO and UNEP to access data relevant for the understanding of climate change, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation. The IPCC produces reports, technical papers and supporting material which are available at this website.
  • Population-Environment Research Network
This site is sponsored by The International Union for the Scientific Study of Populations (IUSSP) and the International Human Dimensions Program (IHDP) on global enviornmental change. It seeks to advance academic research on population and the environment by promoting on-line scientific exchange among researchers from social and natural science disciplines worldwide. By clicking on the "RESEARCH DATABASES" on the left one can do advanced searches, or under "WhATS NEW" can see what has been newly added to the database. It also provided acces to full text United Nations Population documents.
  • United Nations University: International Network on Water Environment and Health
Situated at the McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario Canada, you will find you will find UNUINWEH - Maps and GIS on the web.

Sustainable Development

  • IEA
The International Energy Agency is an autonomous agency linked with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The IEA Secretariat collects and analyses energy data, assesses Member countries' domestic energy policies and programmes, makes projections based on differing scenarios and prepares studies and recommendations on specialised energy topics. Excellent site.
  • The IEA Greentie Directory
Searchable database of over 7,700 organisations wordwide involved with greenhouse gas mitigating technologies, contact details for suppliers of technologies, services, equipment, R&D, data and literature.
  • IIASA- International Institute for Applied Systems
Located in Austria; this site is devoted to scientific studies on environmental, economic and technological and social issues in the context of human dimensions of global change. It also provides subject access to IIASA's Publications Catalog, including full text access in PDF for some documents.
  • NCAT- National Center for Appropriate Technology
"With programs in energy, agriculture and communities, NCAT provides information and access to sustainable technologies community-based approaches that can help improve the lives of economically disadvantaged people."
  • REPP_CREST
A UK-based site, this is the Internet information service of the Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology (CREST).
  • Smart Communities Network
Formerly called the Center of Excellence for Sustainable Development, this site offers a host of useful information on the concept of sustainable development. There are overview articles, slide shows, links to other sources of information, recommended books and videos, and educational materials and programs. Very good source.

  • Global Network of Environment and Technology -- GNET
    Innovative Remediation Technologies
  • ISCORS Reports
The Interagency Steering Committee on Radiation Standards is comprised of Federal agencies who facilitate consensus on acceptable levels of radiation risk to the public and workers and promote consistent risk approaches in setting and implementing standards for protection from ionizing radiation. This site has a lot of the full text actual documents.
  • Lists of Toxic Air Contaminant Fact Sheets
This is an alphabetical list of toxic air contaminants that gives Persistence Time or Residence Time for air toxics. Available fact sheets can be found either numerically by Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number or the Department of Transportation (DOT) Number. If applicable, each table of contents includes the CAS# and the DOT# for each chemical.
