Toxicology - Biological (or Medical)
and Environmental
General Toxicology
- Acute Exposure Guideline Levels
"Acute Exposure Guideline Levels, or AEGLs, are intended to describe the risk to humans resulting from once-in-a-lifetime, or rare, exposure to airborne chemicals. The National Advisory Committee for AEGLs is developing these guidelines to help both national and local authorities, as well as private companies, deal with emergencies involving spills, or other catastrophic exposures.
At the URL click on CHEMICALS at the bottom of the page to search AEGLs."
- Agency for Toxic Substances & Diseases Registry
Contains national alerts, health advisories, databases, related organizations & internet resources, etc. Includes a Glossary
of Terms.
- Carcinogen Potency Database
Resource on the results of chronic, long-term animal cancer tests.
- Concise International
Chemical Assessment Documents (CICADs)
- Database of Environmental
Fate of Chemicals (DBEFC)
Gives data on transformation & degradation, distribution of chemicals
in sediments, chemicals in ambient air, photochemical reaction of chemicals
in environmental air, and chemical component at sources. A limited number
of chemicals is included.
- Disorders of Environmental
Origin
Layperson information resource from the Karolinski Institute. Stockholm,
Sweden.
- ECOTOX
A source for locating single chemical toxicity data for aquatic life, terrestrial
plants and wildlife. ECOTOX integrates three U.S. EPA, Office of Research
and Development (ORD), National Health and Environmental Effects Research
Laboratory (NHEERL), Mid-Continent Ecology Division, toxicology effects
databases; AQUIRE (aquatic life), PHYTOTOX (terrestrial plants), and TERRETOX
(terrestrial wildlife). Valuable site but difficult to use.
- EMCI
Chemical References Web Pages
You can search full text on the EPA Chemical Substance Fact Sheets.
- Endocrine Receptors
- Environmental Health Information Service
EHIS is a service of the NIH-National Institute of Environmental Health
and the DHHS-National Toxicology Program. Excellent site.
- Health Effects & Protection
- Household Products Database
“The Household Products Database of the National Library of Medicine
is based on the Consumer Product Information Database ©2001 by DeLima
Associates…This database links over 4,000 consumer brands to health
effects from Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) provided by the manufacturers
and allows scientists and consumers to research products based on chemical
ingredients.”
- IRIS: Integrated Risk Information System
IRIS is a database of human health effects that may result from exposure
to various substances found in the environment. The 536 substances are listed
in alphabetical order. You can scroll and click on the substance you want,
or use your browser's Find command to search for a substance name or Chemical
Abstracts Service Registry Number (CASRN). When you go to a substance file,
use the Back command on your browser to return to the list.
- NIEHS: National Toxicology
Program
Contains links to NTP Factsheets, Testing Information & Study Results,
NTP Report on Carcinogens, a search engine for the NTP study databases,
Chemical Health & Safety Information, and links to all the agencies
that participate in NTP.
- Office of Research and Development
-- EPA (ORD)
"The Office of Research and Development uses the Environmental
Information Management System (EIMS) Database to store its research
databases including the regional vunerability assessment database, the environmental
monitoring and assessment database, the global change database and the total
human exposure risk database."
- Pesticide
Information Profiles (PIPs)
This site contains documents which provide specific pesticide information
relating to health and environmental effects. PIPs are not based on an exhaustive
literature search. The information does not in any way replace or supersede
the information on the pesticide product labeling or other regulatory requirements.
- Right to
Know Hazardous Substance Fact Sheets
There is information on over 1,000 hazardous and toxic chemicals in this
regularly updated database; files are available only in PDF.
- RTK Net Environmental Database
This site is the home of the Toxic Release Inventory (trI); a database of
information about releases and transfers of toxic chemicals from manufacturing
facilities. Facilities must report their releases of a toxic chemical to
trI if they fulfill criteria enumerated at this site.
- Toxic Substances Hydrology
Program
From the U.S. Geological Survey. This program provides unbiased earth science
information on the behavior of toxic substances in U.S. hydrologic environments.
The information is used to avoid human exposure, to develop effective cleanup
strategies, and to prevent further contamination.
- Toxicology and Environmental
Health Information Program
The SIS Division's Toxicology and Environmental Health Information Program
(TEHIP) sponsors publications, responds to information queries, supports
the information requirements of other Federal agencies, and develops interactive
retrieval services in toxicology and environmental health.
Biological
& Chemical Weapons
- Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response
Put out by the CDC, this is an excellent site for information on bioterrorism
preparedness and Response.
- CBW Conventions
Bulletin
Formerly the Chemical Weapons Convention Bulletin, this is a fulltext journal,
providing news, background and comment on chemical and biological warfare
issues. There is a three month delay before issues are put on the web.
